VYCHYLOVKA (28 km from Vrátna)

Kysuce village museum in Nová Bystrica – Vychylovka is located in picturesque surroundings of Chmúra valley, which is a part of Kysuce protected landscape and is a permanent exposition in nature, which is one of the largest in Slovakia. Exposition documents and presents the way of living and culture of people in Kysuce in the past. The exposition has all together 34 buildings. Each year during the season visitors have a possibility to see examples of the work of crafters, performances by folklore groups and ensembles with examples of working and ceremonial customs, preparation of traditional meals in Kysuce and so on.

In addition to buildings of the folk architecture, there is also an important technical monument - a narrow-gauche forrest railway with an dead end system, which connected Kysuce and Orava region in the past. This mountain railway is nowadays the only funtioning historic dead end railway in Europe and one of the few in the world (others are in South America and India). It was built in 1926 and originally reached a length of 110 km in hilly terrain. Until the 1970s, the railway was used mainly to transport the logs from the forest. Since its reconstruction, this museum railway has been used to transport the visitors on a romantic 3.6 km long route passing the complex of the Kysuce village museum.

The railway has a set schedul, accoriding to which it transports visitors in the season from May to October.
